Why is it that employers discriminate against well-groomed men with long hair and it's legal to

Asking a man with long hair to cut his hair for work, is forcing him to change his life's identity outside of work.

With wonderful work reviews, a good work ethic, every time a control freak comes along and says "I can make you cut your hair" my brother is out of a job.

And yet no case has been won for discrimination in any instances of firing for the reason of being a long-haired man.

Women can have long hair style the same way, back in a ponytail, but the man gets fired--yes, for the hair!

Employers who claim to hire for diversity, he goes through the interview and all is fine until they say, he'd have to cut his hair. Diversity?!

He's not cutting his hair. It's part of who he is.

He finds it indignant and personally humiliating to be harassed by management for long hair, especially when they hired him with his long hair, he passes probationary periods with glowing reviews with his clean, well groomed long hair.

He's 40, honest, reliable, congenial.

What can be done?

Why is it that employers discriminate against well-groomed men with long hair and it's legal to do so?

i know, there is alot of mother***ing employers that need to stop imposing their styling ideas on their employees, An employee should ofcourse be presentable but i believe that employee's are there for one thing and one thing only, to get the job done. thats it!!!!! This gets me so mad!!!!

cut his hair.

If he's that good, he can find a job with long hair.

If not, then he's saying his "style" is more important than the job.

It's the Employer's right.

As an employer, I make an offer to a potential employee. He is free to make a counter-offer. My offer might include conditions like appearance and grooming. He can make his offer conditioned on my not caring about appearance. If we make a deal, great. if not, he finds a more accomodating employer and I find an more dedicated employee. See how that free market thing works?

Why doesn't he put it in a pony tail on the job or something?

That's bull.

Why is it that employers discriminate against well-groomed men with long hair and it's legal to do so?

I am a business owner, and I have the right to hire or not hire based upon whatever criteria I have set for the position in question. Your brother should look for a job that wants someone with long hair. If he can't find one, and still wants a job, cut it. Why would your brother's rights to long hair be more important than a business owner's rights to hire suitable employees? If having long hair is more important to him than the job available, that is clearly his decision, and not an issue to be forced down the throat of an employer.

For a lot of people including Natives long hair is an ethnic thing, but whatever the reason he should not be required to cut it. Can he maybe braid it back so it's not as noticable?

What kind of jobs is he trying to get? If he is in retail management try Target. I've known of some lawyers with long hair but they were all Native Americans.

Here's a news flash.

HE DOESN'T HAVE A RIGHT TO A JOB!

HE DOESN'T HAVE THE RIGHT TO FORCE SOMEONE TO HIRE HIM!

The Business owner has the right to set the standards of appearance.

That includes hair, makeup, piercings, footwear, whatever.

If your "brother" doesn't like the terms of employment, he can go elsewhere.

If NOBODY will hire him, that's the price of individualism.

I, personally, would hire someone with long hair and not care. However, I would not hire someone that had this same attitude about work.
