My hair has been very long, shoulder length and is now very short. When it was very long, I wore it braided. I made the mistake of thinking if I relaxed it, it would give me more variation. Big mistake, my hair grows fast and needing touchups every 3 weeks. I got tired of all the expense involved and the waiting at the salon. I cut it all off and then let it grow out naturally wearing it twisted for a long time. I got tired of that because I had to keep a head band on to keep it out of my face. On a whim, I cut it short. I do not even own a comb at this point. I just wash apply a leave in conditioner and go. without the curling irons, blow dryers and other assaults on my hair, the ringlets I had as a baby have returned and my hair is shiny and soft.

I am a white person born with a thick tight naturally curled head of blonde hair-all my life as a child I was picked on and called names. When I reached high school I met a black girl who showed me how to straighten my hair with a hot iron--ya know the old ones not like these cute new ones they have out---for years I fought the curl---then I cut all my hair short and let it go natural--long before anyone white ever had short curly afros--I figure it is a gift--it is who I am--it makes me unigue--I can't change it and why should I want to?It's like fighting the law of nature....

What made you decide to grow out or cut off your relaxed hair?

I have relaxed hair now, but when I wore my locks last year, I felt different. Good. And it was so manageable. I got compliments from guys outside of my race who loved the curly/locked do and now I am sporting straight and sleek. I change my hair dos often because that is just me, I can't keep one look all the time. Maybe next year I'll have braids and then an afro later on....
