Do I need a license to "style" hair in California? no color or cutting at all just updo

I have been styling hair for a long time. Twist, braids, updo's ect. and many people ask me why i dont charge so i was wondering if I need a license before I can do so. I dont want to do any color or cutting or anything too major just styling for special occasions and things like that. I live in california any information would be great.

To my knowledge, you only need a licence for hairdressing when it comes to chemical work. If you choose to cut and style without training, I believe that it's up to you. It's not advisable to cut anyone's hair as you don't know that you're doing or anything about hair diseases. But as far as braiding and curling goes, yeah, I don't see why not.

You're not endangering anyone and you're only doing what other people who rent stalls at a market/festivals do.

Further more, you shouldn't branch off into extensions without proper training as that can be just as dangerous as chemical work.

So, if you want to try up-styles, why not? If you're good people will come to you and if you're not, just like the rest of us, you won't have a clientele. *shrugs*

I really don't see why you'd need to be fully qualified to style hair into hair-ups.

Pepper.
